Baystate Medical Center celebrated the 30th Anniversary of its Transplant Program at the Carriage House at Barney Estate in Forest Park.
Dozens of medical staff, donors, and transplant recipients gathered to share their stories.
Over 1,000 transplants have taken place at the hospital since the program was started.
22News spoke with Dr. George Lipkowitz, the Director of Transplantation, and he said, “1,000 is a large number and for an area like this when I first came and interviewed I remember one of the lead nephrologists who really wasn’t supportive of transplant saying we’d never do more than five or six transplants a year. Luckily, I didn’t listen because over the last 30 years we’re averaging more than 30-35 a year.”
Baystate’s respected transplant program, which includes five experienced surgeons, is the only one in our region.
