In honor of the seven-year anniversary of the EF-3 tornado that devastated Springfield in 2011, Mayor Domenic Sarno asked residents to pause for a moment of silence Friday afternoon.
Bells rang out at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 4:38 p.m., the time the tornado touched down in Springfield.
Mayor Sarno was at the church for the bell ringing ceremony, and he commented on how far the city has come in the past seven years.
“Not in my wildest dreams when I got word that we were gonna get hit by a tornado that you think it would happen,” said Mayor Sarno. “We mark the anniversary, we don’t celebrate it, we mark it and a lot of progress has been made, we’ve learned a lot.”
Fridays moment of silence was in honor of the three people who died and those whose lives were impacted by the tornado.
