Benches return to Court Square after being gone for over 10 years

Hampden County

After being gone for more than a decade, benches have returned to Springfield’s Court Square.

Several benches now surround the fountain in Court Square. The benches were removed in 2006 and the city has been saying for years they would return.

Construction, the gathering of homeless people, and redevelopment planning were all blamed for their extended absence.

John Simpson of Springfield told 22News, “It makes me really happy, and right away there were people playing live music out here, and these benches were full of people happy and sitting and enjoying the park. It’s been a long time coming, but I’m glad it’s here.”

Court Square also recently had bicycles installed as part of the new Valley Bike Share program.
