Big Y aiming to end hunger problems in western Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Big Y made a chain-wide effort to help the less fortunate.

Through their Sack Hunger program, almost 22,000 bags were filled with non-perishable items. The program runs November through December.

Since Sack Hunger was started eight years ago over 133,000 bags have been donated. Big Y also donates healthy food to local food banks six days a week.

On top of non-perishable items, their donations include meat, produce, and bakery items.

Brian Pepe, a Big Y store director, told 22News, "I mean it's always been a huge part of who we are as a company to help out wherever we possibly can because if we won't be able to utilize it to be able to give it out is always a positive thing."

Big Y donates to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, the Greater Boston Food Bank, Worcester County Food Bank, Foodshare of Greater Hartford and the Connecticut Foodbank.
