Big Y donates money to Holyoke school for playground improvements

Hampden County

Outdoor activity improvements at Holyoke’s First Lutheran Christian School are being funded by Big Y Supermarkets.

Big Y presented a $5,000 check to the nearly 40-year-old school on Wednesday.

The money will go towards playground upgrades that haven’t been made since the school opened in 1981.

Although the school’s application fell short for the Big Y $10,000 holiday sweepstakes, the supermarket chain recognized the importance of the playground improvements.

“I was in the office with the secretaries,” Principal Marianna Bishoff recounted. “And I was reading the letter to them… I mean, you come to the part where it says they’re going to give you $5,000… We were just speechless, we couldn’t believe it.”

The students will see the benefits of the $5,000 donation later this year. The school says it expects to complete the playground improvements by the end of the summer.
