Bob “The Bike Man” Charland is helping to keep the homeless population safe this winter.
He’s once again providing police with bags filled with basic necessities that they can hand out to homeless people.
Charland’s organization “Pedal Thru Youth” has spent the past two months collecting donations to purchase the supplies and put these bags together. They include protein shakes, toiletries, gloves, and winter hats.
Charland told 22News it’s a way to help law enforcement connect with the communities they serve.
“It shows the positive side of law enforcement, it shows that these men and women have empathy for the people in the community,” Charland said. “They’re not out there just to do arrests and drug busts, they are there to help.”
Charland currently has 150 bags prepared for six different police departments.
Wednesday night there were representatives from the State Police, Chicopee detectives and Springfield Police to pick up the bags.
Charland told 22News he has received enough donations to put together 100 more.
