Breweries and wineries could soon be coming to West Springfield.
Mayor Will Reichelt has asked the Town Council to amend the city’s zoning ordinance to allow permits for wineries and breweries.
The zoning changes would allow for breweries or wineries to be permitted in business and industrial zoning areas.
Mayor Reichelt told 22News the change would encourage the reuse of industrial buildings and redevelopment in West Springfield. By bringing breweries or wineries to the city, the hope is it could benefit other local businesses by driving more foot traffic to the city’s downtown.
“It would be to impact the city, yes. And I think if it could make the business grow, I think that would be a good idea,” said Johnny Velez of Springfield. “Like right now, we’re in the plaza, that would make more business grow I believe”.
The proposed changes would also allow for businesses with indoor recreational purposes to be allowed in industrial zones.
The Town Council is holding a public hearing on the proposal Monday night at City Hall.
