Brimfield police enter third day of search for missing man

Hampden County

Brimfield Police say they have been searching for Eric Malerbi in the area of Long Pond. He has been missing since Friday evening.

He’s a 54-year-old who was last seen at 309 Sturbridge Road in Brimfield.

Monday, day three of the search, was concentrated on the water. Divers from the Massachusetts State Police Underwater Recovery Unit went to search the icy water in scuba gear.

“I wasn’t sure what was going on if they were just doing an exercise, you know the police and fire rescue team,” said Kevin Frykenberg of Brimfield. “But, I found out later that they were looking for a man. I think that’s horrible.”

People who live in Brimfield told 22News that people come to the Long Pond area for outdoor activities year round.

“Mostly ice fishing, but it’s not really safe,” said Roland McCurdy, noting that the pond isn’t fully frozen. “No where is safe.”

Mass Wildlife says that people should use caution outdoors this time of year. They suggest always letting someone know your outdoor plans, and never walk out onto water that looks frozen. Always consider ice to be dangerous.

Malerbi is described by police as wearing a fleece jacket and jeans when he was last seen. Anyone with information is asked to call the Brimfield Police Department at 413-245-7222.

The Brimfield Police Department says there are no risks to the public and are asking people to avoid the area while they continue their search.
