Related took over the management of the apartment building in 2017. Their Skyview Downtown renovation project includes new windows, revamped apartments, a resident community space, and a new fitness center.
At 289 feet, the 34-story main tower is the fourth tallest building in the city.
“I’m looking for affordable housing and that could be an option,” said Pete Veliz of Springfield. I wouldn’t mind being in an apartment. I’ve never been in a high rise apartment before.”
Chestnut Tower was once considered a luxury apartment, but many tenants have reported maintenance issues with the building over the past few years.
Tenants who currently live in this apartment building we spoke with Wednesday said this renovation project is long overdue. They declined to go on camera, but they said the elevators don’t work properly and the building is deteriorating.
“Elevators are a big deal in a place like that and there will be new elevators, and there will be a complete redo of the building,” said Kevin Kennedy, chief development officer for the city of Springfield. “It should be much more efficient.”
Kennedy told 22News tenants will be moved to a nearby hotel while their apartments are being renovated. The renovations are expected to begin the second week of May.
Kennedy said there is still no completion date for the Skyview Downtown renovation project, but it’ll take at least a year.
