A Chicopee church will no longer be holding worship services. The Saint Patrick’s Church on Broadway Street held its final Mass last Saturday.
Springfield Diocese spokesman Mark Dupont said the church had previously stopped holding Masses altogether, but then began holding one a week a few years ago.
Dupont said parishioners were told the weekly Mass would only be able to continue if 100 people attended, but the numbers had dipped to 30 or 40.
Dupont also said there just aren’t enough priests.
Jennifer Figueroa of Springfield told 22News, “I believe a lot of them are historical landmarks that we’ve grown up seeing. I think especially these days we need the churches open, so it’s sad.”
Dupont said the decision was announced a month ago, and parishioners had been notified in every Mass since.
It’s not clear yet what will become of the Saint Patrick’s Church building.
