Chicopee pantry preparing ahead of summertime food demand

Hampden County

It’s not too early to make plans for helping the Western Massachusetts Letter Carriers food drive May 12.

Springfield area food pantries such as Lorraine’s Kitchen in Chicopee depend heavily on their share of the Letter Carrier’s food drive.

Especially with the added demands from families whose children will no longer have two meals at school during the summer.

“One of the highest months is actually August,” said Andrea Marion, executive director at Lorraine’s Kitchen. “The most clients come in and they say school being out, parents are really having to rely on other sources to feed their children.”

Marion credits the upcoming postal workers food drive with providing her agency with up to 20 percent of the food Lorraine’s Kitchen gives to families in need during the summer months.
