CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The man injured in a motor vehicle crash Thursday morning has died. Chicopee police were called to Meadow Street due to a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist Thursday morning.

According to Chicopee Police, the man was treated at the scene for injuries and taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

Our 22News crew could see a bicycle and luggage in the middle of the road, which was closed off by police at the intersection of Meadow and Chicopee streets. A vehicle was seen heavily damaged in the front and with a broken windshield.

“Unfortunately, I saw the bicycle in the road and I thought, ‘Oh no, not another tragedy.’ I think we all need to do our best and take extra time and slow down, I know that sounds very basic but people just don’t see to do it,” said Carlton Brown of Springfield.

Several officers, firefighters, and paramedics were on Meadow Street assisting with the incident. Meadow Street reopened to traffic at 12:30 p.m. The Chicopee Police Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating.

The City of Chicopee is experiencing an increase in deadly motor vehicle crashes this year, with number of deaths the highest in seven years. It has gotten so serious that city officials are starting to take action.

According to data from MassDOT there have been 1,595 accidents in Chicopee this year and 10 of those have been deadly. Half of the deadly crashes in Chicopee involve pedestrians, two of which happened on Chicopee Street. Chicopee Police say the increase in deadly crashes this year is a good reminder for drivers to stay aware, especially now that it’s getting dark early.

Chicopee Public Information Officer Travis Odiorne told 22News, “We’re just asking people to slow down, be aware of your surroundings, keep your eye out for pedestrians whether they are crossing the street or walking along the side of the road.”

Many people in Chicopee are expressing the need for something to be done.

“I think it’s a multi-layered issue between like the mayor’s office and the police department and coming up with a solid plan, and then maybe getting more police out here. But this is an ongoing issue clearly,” said Bill Ansari of Chicopee.

Chicopee city officials are holding a news conference Friday to address accidents as a result of reckless driving in the city.
