Chicopee Police are warning residents of a new telephone scheme.
The caller tells you a criminal has stolen your identity and was arrested, charged with serious offenses. They’ll ask for your name and for you to verify your Social Security number. Then they ask for payment in the form of a gift card.
Never give information to anyone over the phone. No professional government agency will ask for payment in the form of gift cards.
“If anybody requests your information whether it’s social security number, name birthday, they say they are law enforcement, they say they are from the IRS don’t listen to it,” said Chicopee Police Officer Mike Wilk.
If you receive a call like this, just hang up. And tell your elderly relatives not to talk to these people.
If you get their number on caller ID, give it to the police.
