The opioid epidemic continues to plague western Massachusetts, and as a result, Chicopee is now planning to sue opioid manufacturers.
Chicopee is one of dozens of communities planning to sue these companies.
Right now Mayor Kos told 22News they’re searching for a law firm to represent the city.
According to the Massachusetts Municipal Association, or MMA, more than 30 cities and towns have joined this nationwide movement to sue pharmaceutical companies and distributors for municipal costs resulting from the epidemic.
Mayor Kos told 22News, Chicopee is going over the research neighboring communities have done to sue these companies.
The city will also be conducting their own research as they try to select a law firm to represent them.
Kos also said communities become subject to major costs trying to fight the ongoing opioid crisis, and that it’s important to protect our interests going forward.
The MMA says the Franklin County city of Greenfield became the first Massachusetts community to file a suit in U.S. District Court.
