Crashes continue to be a problem on Longmeadow Curve

Hampden County

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A car accident on the Longmeadow Curve Monday morning has marked the sixth crash on that stretch of roadway so far this year.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesperson Patrick Marvin told 22News that his agency plans on releasing a draft version of a study that they have been doing on Interstate 91 since 2014. That study includes an evaluation and analysis of travel on a part of the highway that includes the Longmeadow Curve.

Monday’s crash took place on the northbound side of the highway during the early morning hours. State police in Springfield told 22News that they are now looking into what caused the single-vehicle crash.

The Longmeadow Curve is a traditionally dangerous spot, with drivers entering and exiting the highway so close to one another. Drivers often have to merge in front of oncoming traffic, in order to get into their correct lanes.

One person has died already this year in a crash on the Longmeadow Curve. A second death took place near Exit 2 in November of 2016.
