A broken elevator is causing problems for dozens of elderly residents at the Veterans Park Apartments building in downtown Holyoke.
The one elevator in the 110-year-old building broke down earlier this month. OneHolyoke, a nonprofit community development corporation, manages the building.
Executive Director Michael Moriarty told 22News, everything’s being done to assist the tenants, the oldest person being 89 years old.
“We meet with each tenant. We know their physical challenges so we can make reasonable accommodations for each of them based on their circumstances” Moriarty explained. “And we’re going to continue to do that.”
Moriarty said steps are being taken right now to temporarily relocate one of the elderly tenants until the elevator is fully operable again in the spring.
He said they’ve assigned extra staff to help with tenants getting up and down the stairs.
