Driver trapped inside car after crashing into building

Hampden County

Firefighters had to free a man trapped inside his car, after his vehicle crashed into a building and a fence on Bay Street early Friday morning.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the driver of the 1997 Toyota Avalon. The driver had crashed into a building at 784 Bay Street, as well as a chain link fence before 4:00 A.M.

Leger said that the driver is expected to recover from his injuries. He said that the crash should not affect the business that was struck by the car.

Bay Street from Roosevelt Avenue to Tapley Street had been closed following the accident, but has since re-opened.
