East Longmeadow Health Dept. addressing concerns over uncollected trash

Hampden County

There’s been confusion and frustration over trash bags not being collected in East Longmeadow.

The city’s Health Department has had more than 50 calls from residents complaining that their trash was not picked up this week.

East Longmeadow Health Director Aimee Petrosky told 22News the city made it a requirement in 2008 that the weight of a residents trash barrel must not exceed 35 gallons.

The city’s trash contractor Republic Services has been placing blue tags on trash barrels since July for barrels that exceeded 35 gallons.

She said many residents still are not aware of the trash barrel weight limit since the city hadn’t been enforcing it until just recently.

Petrosky said residents have had their receiving tags

“People were caught off guard because they didn’t know that the barrel was non-compliant,” said Petrosky. “This was the week after Thanksgiving and they had trash. And when it’s not getting picked up and they have no idea why it’s not getting picked up, that’s an understandable level of frustration.”

Petrosky told 22News they are providing two free green bags to anyone who didn’t get the blue tag notifications. She said Republic will pick up an unlimited number of these bags regardless of their weight.

Petrosky said their contract with Republic expires in June of next year and they will look towards hiring a new company to conduct the city’s trash collections.
