More Sears stores will be closing their doors soon, including one here in western Massachusetts.
Thursday, the company announced at least 72 Sears and Kmart stores, which had been determined to be “non-profitable,” will close “in the near future.” Among those stores is the Sears location at the Eastfield Mall in Springfield.
The Eastfield Mall Sears is set to close in early September, with the nearby Sears Auto Center expected to close next month.
Sears and Kmart had a total of 3,500 U.S. stores between them when they merged in 2005, but that number of locations has been reduced with multiple rounds of store closings. Sears closed their location at the Enfield Square Mall in April of 2017, and at the Berkshire Mall in Lanesborough in January. The Kmart store on Liberty Street in Springfield closed this past fall.
The Eastfield Mall store closure will leave Holyoke Mall location as the only remaining full-service Sears department store in western Massachusetts. In Hadley, the company operates a “Sears Hometown Store;” a smaller location specializing in appliances, electronics, and lawn/garden equipment. Sister brand Kmart maintains stores in Holyoke and Palmer.
