Electrical fire temporarily closes Springfield Student Prince

Hampden County

UPDATE: Student Prince Cafe and Fort Restaurant announced on their Facebook page that they will resume their normal hours tomorrow morning.

The Springfield Fire Department was able to avoid a potentially very dangerous situation downtown Sunday morning.

Springfield Fire Commissioner B.J. Calvi told 22News an automatic fire alarm went off at the Student Prince on Fort Street at 9:45 a.m. in the morning.

When fire crews arrived they found smoke in the basement, as well as throughout the building.

Multiple emergency crews, as well as Eversource and Columbia Gas, were called in as a precaution.

After an extensive search of the building, Calvi said it was determined that an electrical fire underneath the sidewalk was what caused the smoke.

“Very lucky today. Everyone did an outstanding job. No injuries and we were able to make sure no further damage was done to the building,” said Calvi.

Student Prince Cafe and Fort Restaurant was not open Sunday night but will resume normal hours Monday morning.
