WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WWLP) – The Wilbraham police department received a call Wednesday when a resident discovered an old unexploded explosive device in their basement.

That’s right you never know what you are going to find if you are cleaning out a home or garage but the Wilbraham Fire Chief said if you suspect you have found an explosive or explosive material, your first step should be to call 911.

According to Chief Micheal Andrews, the resident was cleaning out their basement when they found the device, which appeared to be a firework that had been in the basement for sometime. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad removed the device and took it to the wastewater facility near the Chicopee River. The device was then detonated around 6:15 p.m.

We recommend that they call 911 let them know what they found sometimes what we’ve had in the past is people cleaning out homes and they find unknown chemicals, they are not sure what they are, so we ask that they call 911. Michael Andrews Wilbraham Fire Chief

Calling 911 will initiative a quick response from authorities, they can investigate it, secure the residence and notify and other agencies that could help with the disposal process.
