Family of Springfield murder victim give back to community

Hampden County

Family and friends are giving back to others to keep a Springfield murder victim’s legacy alive.

The “Looking Onto XCellence” foundation held a fundraiser banquet at the Castle of Knights in Chicopee Friday night.

The non-profit organization was created in memory of Ivery Downie, who was murdered at a Springfield gas station last May. His family’s mission is to empower and uplift youth and the community through charity, scholarship and mentoring.

Foundation vice president Dr. Katrina Banks told 22News, “There’s so many negative things going on in Springfield. There’s so many senseless murders going on in Springfield. We want to be able to have a positive impact on the community.”

The theme of the night’s event was “Triumph Over Tragedy.” All proceeds from the banquet will go to the endowment fund that will award scholarships to youth who have experienced adversity.
