Forest Park’s Main Greeting Road closing for repair of collapsed culvert

Hampden County

Beginning on Tuesday, crews will begin to fix a collapsed culvert at Swan Pond in Springfield’s Forest Park.

Main Greeting Road will be closed to cars and foot traffic until November 1st.

Springfield’s Executive Director of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management said the city will replace the collapsed culvert at Swan Pond, a $3 million state-financed project.

Phil and Dixie Patten of Wilbraham frequently take their dogs into Forest Park through the Main Greeting Road entrance.

Phil said they’ll be inconvenienced by the road closing, “but not that much. I’ve come in from Trafton Road. It won’t be that bad.”

Getting in an out of the park is still possible from Route 5 near Longmeadow and from Trafton Road.

Those two entrances will continue to provide access to the farmers market, the Barney Carriage House and the Forest Park pool and splash pad.
