A former student has inspired a Springfield Technical Community College educator to help build a health clinic in Africa.
Esther Perrelli Brookes, the head of STCC’s Respiratory Care Department will spend two weeks in Tankular, a village of one thousand in the West African nation of Gambia.
She told 22News how her former student, N’Famara Taal influenced her decision to go to Gambia.
“He asked me what do you think? Should I start this village, my people have to walk over 15 miles to get a Tylenol for a headache,” said Brookes. “They have nothing in the village. I want to build a clinic. What do you think? I said, absolutely. Two years later, here we are.”
Much of the medical supplies purchased with donations are already on their way to Gambia.
Brookes will spend two weeks doing humanitarian work.
She leaves for Africa Sunday.
