CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Hundreds of Chicopee children in need will continue getting free lunches this summer.
Since the free in-school lunch program concluded last week, the Valley Opportunity Council began delivering lunches to where the students live on Monday.
Dozens of children received lunch at Sarah Jane Sherman playground in Chicopee’s Willimansett neighborhood.
Thomas O’Dea appreciates his grandchild receiving a free lunch in the park.
“It’s very important, everybody gets a chance to eat, especially when they really need it,” O’Dea said. “That’s how I feel about that.”
The federal government provides the money for the summer lunch program, every weekday through August.
Sarah Jane playground is just one of a dozen Chicopee locations where the Valley Opportunity Council provides free lunch.
