The Friendly’s restaurant on Sumner Avenue in Springfield closed its doors Sunday.
Customers were made aware of the closure after reading a note posted on the restaurant’s front door–“We apologize for disappointing you on this visit, but this location is now closed for business.”
The notice also says the company is in the process of transferring employees to other locations and providing short-term financial assistance for those who wish to find other jobs in the area.
The Sumner Avenue restaurant is one of the multiple locations that have closed in recent months. Friendly’s restaurants have also closed in Ludlow, Westfield, and South Hadley this year.
One woman who goes to the Sumner Avenue location every day was in disbelief.
“It’s not here anymore,” said Jackie Fleury of West Springfield. “It’s sad, I’m sad. this is an institution, this shouldn’t happen.”
Friendly’s is trying to find jobs for the Sumner Ave. employees at other locations in the area. According to Friendly’s, the Boston Road location in Springfield is still open.
