Frustrated loved ones remember victims found at Springfield Page Blvd. house

Hampden County

Family and friends are mourning the loss of three women found dead in Stewart Weldon’s home in Springfield last week.

Candles and flowers have been left across the street from 1333 Page Boulevard where police found the remains of Kayla Escalante, America Lyden, and Ernestine Ryans.

“I drive by this house every day, so just knowing that I was right there, steps away,” said Diamond Matos, niece of America Leyden.

Family members comforted each other Tuesday across the street from the Page Blvd. home where 34-year-old Leydon of Springfield’s body was found after she’d been missing for months.

Remains of the three women were found in and around the home of 40-year-old Steward Welden, but he has yet to be criminally charged in connection with their deaths. The brother of Ernestine Ryans said no one ever had a bad thing to say about his sister.

“She meant a lot to a lot of people,” Anthony Ryans told 22News. “She was kind, she was caring. She would do anything for you.”

Claudia Reed, a friend and former lawyer for Kayla Escalante of Ludlow, said the 27-year-old was a mother who will be missed.

“Kayla was the sweetest, most loving, funny, upbeat person,” Reed told 22News. “I don’t know how long she was in that house, I don’t know what happened to her. I cared about Kayla so much, and I want answers.”

Welden is currently being held on two $1 million bails for unrelated kidnapping and sexual assault charges.

Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said Monday that no charges will be brought for the three women’s deaths until the medical examiner determines how they died.
