Gaming Commission discuss final plans for MGM opening

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Gaming Commission met in Springfield Thursday morning, to discuss final preparations for the opening of MGM Springfield.

On the agenda for Thursday’s meeting at the MassMutual Center was several items regarding the casino, including:

  • MGM Springfield opening traffic plan presentation
  • GameSense communications strategy
  • MGM Springfield Operations Certificate status presentations
  • Determination of final stage of construction
  • Approval of MGM Springfield opening for testing and evaluation
  • Approval of MGM Springfield compliance with Gaming Law, MGC Regulations, conditions of Gaming License
  • Springfield Public Safety/Crime Baseline Report

When traveling to the casino, MGM recommends you plan ahead, know where to park and use alternative transportation when possible.

MGM Springfield GM Alex Dixon told 22News they are expecting tens of thousands of people for the opening day festivities. To help mitigate traffic and parking, shuttle service will be provided from the Big E fairgrounds beginning at 6:00 a.m. on opening day.

“We want to make sure we’re able to use a parking lot in this area that people are used to. Those shuttles will reduce the number of single occupant vehicles that will be coming to our site,” said Dixon.

Many are hoping that MGM’s proximity to I-91 will help keep traffic flowing.

Steve Crosby of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission told 22News, “The parking lot is right next to I-91 too so most of the traffic will come off 91 and go right into the parking lot, I think they’ve done a lot to keep traffic problems to a minimum.”
