Gerena School in Springfield collecting turkeys for local families in need

Hampden County

The Gerena School in Springfield will be handing out turkeys once again this year to low income families this Thanksgiving.

The school is hoping to collect enough turkeys and fixings from area businesses to feed all of their families in need. Gerena School has been running this Thanksgiving turkey distribution for the last few years but this is the first year the PTO is leading the effort.

Gerena PTO vice president Jennifer Rowe told 22News they are asking local businesses and community partners to donate turkeys and all the typical Thanksgiving fixings like potatoes and stuffing.

All donated turkeys will be stored in the Gerena School kitchen freezer up until the week before Thanksgiving.

Gerena School Principal Cynthia Escribano told 22News, “We do have some families that are in great need so what a wonderful thing to do in the holiday giving season to kick off and support the families that could use a Thanksgiving meal.”

Escribano told 22News they’ve collected up to 20 turkeys in the past years of this distribution, but they are hoping to feed 30 families in need this year.

Rowe said the Gray House and the Agawam Junior High volunteer group have already agreed to donate turkeys to the school.
