The New North Citizens Council’s efforts to restore the lives of Puerto Rico hurricane victims have gotten Senator Edward Markey’s attention.
Senator Markey sent his state director Jim Cantwell to Springfield on Tuesday to learn more about Citizens Council’s Welcome Center.
The welcome center is where hurricane victims like Ruth Santiago are getting a fresh start, as well as medical help for her sight problems.
“It has improved a lot, what we’ve been trying to accomplish for many years. We’ve done in four months,” Santiago said. “Our emotional and physical health isn’t very stable, but it has been improving a lot.”
The welcome center is located in the Gerena Community School complex.
The center’s staff is currently helping 450 displaced families from Puerto Rico, providing them with daily necessities while helping them find apartments and employment.
