For the second consecutive year, gypsy moth caterpillars have eaten the leaves off numerous trees at Glenville Park in the Town of Ware.
Ware Parks Manager John Piechota estimates that the caterpillars have stripped the leaves of 30 percent of the trees in the park. It’s not as severe as last year, but serious enough according to Piechota.
“To see all these leaves empty and usually used for shade,” Piechota told 22News. “It’s kind of devastating to see all these go and all the caterpillars dropping on people trying to have picnics, it is kind of discouraging.”
Piechota’s biggest concern is whether these trees can survive a second straight year of defoliation by these caterpillars.
