Hampden County Sheriff's Department conducted live active shooter training

LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) - A sometimes loud and violent four-hour drill provided a realistic attack scenario meant to prepare workers at the Hampden County House of Corrections.

Hundreds of jail employees learned the lessons that can save their lives in an active shooter situation: hide and barricade, leave the building. And if those options aren't available: fight for your life.

"If you can't evacuate and you're barricaded and you've actually met with confrontation face to face with the shooter, you can't lay down and die, you have to fight," said Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi.

Security company, Protective Advance Safety Services taught jail employees how to maintain mental stability to keep as cool as possible in the event of a planned murderous attack that can happen anytime at any place. 40-percent of these attacks take place in businesses, 29-percent in schools.

"We've given them the tools that are necessary to mitigate their own anxiety, so they're not making any mistakes and come into an institution like this and want to hurt people," said John Nettis from Protective Advance Safety Services.

Employees learned that a mass shooting in the workplace can unfold in just five minutes, but for those who live through the horror, it feels like five hours.
