Holyoke Community College holds ribbon cutting for new Center for Life Sciences

Hampden County

Holyoke Community College held its ribbon cutting for its new Center for Life Sciences Wednesday.

The more than 4.5 million dollar facility features a suite of biotechnology labs and classrooms.

It will also be one of the few colleges or universities in western Massachusetts to have what’s known as a “clean room.”

“The clean room is a space where the air is filtered to very stringent standards,” said Jim Knapp, professor of micro-biology. “It’s clean of particular cell cultures and so on that you don’t want to be contaminated.”

The students will have access to the latest in technology as they pursue a variety of careers in biotechnology, genetics, biology and microbiology.
