Holyoke neighborhood becomes short cut to Route 202

Hampden County

Some West Holyoke residents are concerned about the removal of barriers designed to reduce heavy traffic in their neighborhood.

The barriers at the end of Ashley and Sunset roads at route 202 were set up three weeks ago. They prevented drivers from using the neighborhood as a shortcut between 202 and Homestead Avenue.

Neighbor Chris Hopewell told 22News, he’d like to see the Jersey barriers returned. “The neighborhood just all of a sudden became quiet, you didn’t have to worry about cars racing at high rates heading for 202.”

Chris Hopewell could get his wish depending on what the city council does with a Holyoke DPW report on the effectiveness of the barriers.

City engineer Bob Pierent told 22News, Public safety considerations are key in any decision involving permanent barriers.
