Members of the Holyoke Saint Patrick’s committee gathered Tuesday night to announce the winner of the Citizenship Award for the 2019 parade.
The award is given every year to a person or group that may not be Irish, but has made major contributions to the parade or the committee through the years.
This year’s recipient was Joseph Weisse, owner of a bottled water company in Holyoke, who has donated to the road race every year to help keep thousands of runners hydrated. The award means Weisse will finally get to march in the Saint Patrick’s parade.
Weisse told 22News, “I’ve never marched in it. Obviously I’ve been involved, and it’s on St. Patrick’s Day, this year which is kind of neat. I’m very humbled too, very very very excited”.
Paul Hogan was the 2018 recipient of the award.
