A Springfield hotel group is hoping to turn the former site of the York Street Jail into a riverfront attraction and adding a hotel, indoor skydiving park, and rock climbing.
The Pioneer Valley Hotel Group, which owns the La Quinta in Springfield and several hotels in Hampshire County, is behind the redevelopment. They said downtown Springfield is bustling, and now is the time to build.
Shardool Parmar, the group’s president, said, “Basketball Hall of Fame doing their reinvestment and making some great improvements on their site, and success of that entire area. I think having something that ties into there, an attraction, something interactive, is going to benefit everybody.“
The group doesn’t know what type of hotel it will be yet but said they want it to be a suite style hotel with larger rooms, with a restaurant and a roof deck overlooking the Springfield skyline.
With MGM Springfield occupying Main Street, Nadia Rodriguez said she’s glad to see more development near the riverfront.
“I think it is a really good thing that they’re building it down there instead of more up here towards where all of the other establishments are,” Rodriguez said. “It’s going to draw more attention down there, the Basketball Hall of Fame is going to get more attraction. I have a good feeling about it.“
Hannah Williams, a Springfield resident said, “I do think that more people are gonna try and flock over here, try to open up because this is where everybody is going to be, definitely.“
The Pioneer Valley Hotel Group said they are still in the planning phases, but hope to begin construction next year.
