SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – One firefighter was taken to the hospital and seven people are without a home following a house fire in the Longfellow Terrace section of Springfield Tuesday evening.
According to Springfield Fire Department Captain Drew Piemonte, the extent of the firefighter’s injuries is unknown. Five adults and two children were forced out of their homes after the house fire went from one house to another, causing significant damage.
Capt. Piemonte said crews were initially called to a house fire at 43 Longfellow Terrace around 4 p.m. Crews arrived to find the house on fire prompting nearby fire departments including West Springfield, Westover, East Longmeadow and Wilbraham to respond.
The Holyoke Fire Department also assisted with station coverage.
Strong winds caused the fire at 43 Longfellow Terrace to extend to a nearby home at 37 Longfellow Terrace. The house where the fire started is a complete loss, and the nearby home suffered significant damage, according to Capt. Piemonte.
The fire was eventually extinguished. The western Massachusetts Red Cross is assisting all seven people from both homes.
The Springfield Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
