Illegal dumping problem at Medina Street boat ramp in Chicopee

Hampden County

You could be fined $200 by the City of Chicopee for illegal dumping yet that hasn’t stopped some people from leaving trash at the Medina Street boat ramp to the Chicopee River.

One 22News viewer reported someone abandoned a rotting old boat and trailer a month ago. He also said in the past he has seen everything from couches to televisions. Dumping so close to the boat ramp means some of it can get into the river and Chicopee residents have seen it before.

“Yeah along the sides. Cans, um, just stuff dumped there,” said a Chicopee resident.

The City of Chicopee urges you to bring your trash to the landfill on New Lombard Road. There is no fee, but proof of residency is required. However, to make multiple trips to the landfill to dispose of either bulk or household waste, a permit from the DPW is required, but again, it’s free.

If you need assistance with bulk waste items, you can always call the DPW.
