Late night drag racing on I-391 a problem for nearby residents

Hampden County

One Chicopee resident is frustrated with what he calls ongoing illegal drag racing on I-391.  The resident told 22Newsw the issue has been going on for years and gets incredibly loud late at night on his street near the highway.

“I have all of my windows closed and I still hear it,” said Chicopee resident John, who asked not to give his last name, or be shown on camera.

John said  “Sometimes till midnight, and sometimes it’ll wake me up in the morning. They’ll decide to do something at 2 o’clock in the morning. Somebody is going to get hurt down there.”

State Police wasn’t able to confirm if they’ve had any recent complaints of drag racing on 391, but said the penalty if you get caught isn’t just a speeding ticket. It’s a criminal offense.

Samuel Kopec, who works in Holyoke, said the cops were likely to catch offenders, saying, “That’s highly patrolled 391 by the State Police that I know. That could end real bad real quick.”

Anyone caught drag racing on the highway, will face license suspension.

Even a first offense could land you in jail for up to two and a half years, or a  $1,000 fine.
