Local organization awards student-athlete scholarships

Hampden County

Student athletes were inspired Thursday night before being recognized for their achievements.

Local basketball organization City of Guards presented two former Springfield Central High School student athletes with scholarships. The scholarships were presented after a short documentary film screening that shared the stories of past players who grew up in the western Massachusetts basketball community.

The goal of City of Guards is to get young athletes involved in the community, while also providing them with training and positive sports related events.

City of Guards founder Yusuf Abdul-Ali told 22News, “We’re trying to get kids to understand that they’re student athletes at an earlier age, so they’re prepared once they get to high school and college for the academic side and the athletic side.”

City of Guards is hosting their 4th annual “Who You Got” 1-on-1 basketball tournament at the Basketball Hall of Fame Friday night. All proceeds from the event will help provide more student-athlete scholarships.
