Local picnic event helps veterans reconnect with their communities

Hampden County

Coming home from the military can be a difficult transition, but an event Sunday helped veterans and their families reconnect with their communities.

The Eastern Hampden County Veterans Service District held its first Veterans Picnic in the Park, at East Longmeadow’s Heritage Park.

Families of veterans and families who support veterans were invited for a day of celebration and education, about the resources and services available throughout the Pioneer Valley for Veterans.

“This event was put together to honor our veterans,” Jered Sasen, director of Wilbraham Veteran Services told 22News. “To welcome home some of our Vietnam veterans, but also to bridge gaps between our younger and older veterans, and bring out our veterans to see what our veterans are all about.”

Organizers said the success of Sunday’s event will hopefully help those veterans struggling with PTSD.
