Local residents excited to have new rail option at Union Station

Saturday kicks off a free travel weekend on the new CTrail Hartford line.

Friday marked the ceremonial first rides on the CTrail Hartford line, but full service will officially start Saturday, and it will be free for the weekend!

As service starts on the Hartford line Saturday, the number of daily trips between Springfield and Connecticut will double.

It took forty minutes for Friday’s train to get from Union Station to Hartford, and that was with stops in Windsor and Windsor Locks.

It’s a higher speed train.

One Springfield resident told 22News they look forward to taking advantage of the new rail option.

“I know some friends there, and I would definitely love to go there to Hartford,” said Wendy Bethea of Springfield. “I think it’s a great connection, with Hartford connecting to Union Station. They did an excellent job making the station, it’s just great.”

The more frequent connections between Springfield and Connecticut are expected to draw 2000 more people through Union Station every day. Trains on the new line can travel at faster speeds, cutting back on travel time for commuters.

The free travel weekend runs this Saturday and Sunday on the CTrail Hartford line.
