MGM Springfield announced Thursday they’re opening ahead of schedule, the grand opening originally was set for September 2018.
This came as welcome news for downtown businesses like Red Rose Pizzeria. They’ve been busy through construction and except an even bigger push once the casino opens.
“We’ve already been gearing up for it, we’ve already expanded our lounge area,” Red Rose Pizzeria Manager Rita Caputo- Cupua told 22News. “We’ve increased seating capacity. It’s exciting, I’m so happy that it’s coming.”
For some local residents, this came as a surprise after speculation MGM was thinking about buying Wynn’s Everett casino.
“I think that’s crazy especially with all the speculation and rumors about MGM purchasing another casino out east, I think that’s great news for the local area and wonderful news for the local economy,” Richard Finger told 22News.
With the opening of MGM Springfield comes their boutique-style five-story hotel with 250 guestrooms and MGM events and concerts held at the MassMutual Center.
Two things Springfield business are hoping will drive tourists to them. The opening of MGM Springfield will also bring an increased police presence to the downtown area.
