A Springfield intersection is in the top five of MassDOT’s crash report.
The section where East Columbus Ave and Boland Way meet in downtown Springfield came in at 79th on the list, but Springfield and Holyoke have spots in the top ten.
Saint James Avenue at Saint James Boulevard is fifth on the list of roughly 200 of the state’s worst crash locations. In fact, multiple intersections on Saint James Avenue made the list. As did several intersections on Roosevelt Avenue and Boston Road.
The X in Springfield’s Forest Park Neighborhood came in ninth on the list, and the intersection of Cabot Street and High Street in Holyoke is number 10.
One Springfield driver said more distractions on the road have added to the problem.
“A lot of people are very impatient, a lot of people are on their phone,” said Jose Lopez of Springfield. “That’s why you have so many more accidents. People are going to have to learn to slow down and pay attention.”
MassDOT uses the crash data to improve safety in cities across the state.
The dataset can be used in the state’s Highway Safety Improvement Program which identifies safety projects throughout the state.
