LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – During a meeting Wednesday night, the Longmeadow School Committee voted not to renew the superintendent’s contract.
Longmeadow School Committee Chair Elizabeth Baron told 22News there were 3 votes in favor of renewing Dr. Marty O’Shea’s contract, and 4 votes opposed.
In a statement, Baron told 22News:
The Longmeadow School Committee has determined, through vote, that it will not be renewing the contract for Superintendent M. Martin O’Shea.
The committee recognizes Dr. O’Shea’s service to the district, but believes new direction is needed to drive the mission and vision of the district. The School Committee wishes Dr. O’Shea well with his future professional plans.
Every seat was filled for the Longmeadow School Committee meeting, and students occupied the standing room in the back.
Several people spoke on O’Shea’s behalf. Baron said they were deciding whether to extend his contract beyond next summer. The Longmeadow School Committee sent shock waves across town Wednesday night when they voted against renewing Superintendent O’Shea’s contract.
Now that the committee voted not to renew O’Shea’s contract, it will expire on June 30. Several students participated in a walk-out Thursday afternoon to protest the committee’s decision.
O’Shea served as superintendent for more than two years.

“I can’t say enough about him,” said Kristen DiStefano of Longmeadow told 22News. “Personable, pleasant, he knows your name, and I think he’s done a fabulous job for this town.”
Longmeadow residents created an online petition calling for the resignation of the four school committee members who voted against Dr. O’Shea’s contract renewal.
Dr. O’Shea has been the head of Longmeadow Schools for two and a half years.
