For generations, the Fresh Air Fund has enabled children from the streets of New York to spend part of the summer with western Massachusetts families.
On Tuesday afternoon, several Longmeadow families welcomed four children to begin this unique experience.
The children will spend up to two weeks with their host families. It’s not unusual for some families to welcome the same children summer after summer.
“It’ feels nice to give them a chance to get outside the city,” Longmeadow parent Laura Watroba told 22News. “It’s great for our kids.”
In addition to the four children hosted by Longmeadow families, the bus took another 18 boys and girls from New York to their Fresh Air Fund families in Amherst.
Later this summer, families in Northampton and Greenfield will also welcome children into their homes.
