Man taken to hospital after jumping into Mill River to escape Springfield Police

Hampden County

A man was taken to the hospital after jumping into the Mill River Thursday evening.

Springfield Fire Spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News crews were called to the rear of 32 Fort Pleasant Avenue for a “cold-water high angle rescue” around 5:42 p.m.

Leger said the man jumped into the river, trying to run from police.

Springfield Police spokesman Ryan Walsh said it all started when an officer spotted a man and woman in the Forest Park area wanted for various crimes.

Walsh said the two were in a stolen car and once police stopped the vehicle, they took off on foot.

The woman was arrested near the South End Package Store while the man, who jumped into the Mill River, is in police custody and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Walsh said the man was exposed to elements of cold temperatures after jumping in the river.

The identity of the man and woman, as well as the charges they’re facing, will be announced Friday.
