HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Two manholes caught fire in Holyoke Monday night after electrical equipment failed.
Holyoke Fire Captain Kevin Cavagnac told 22News, firefighters went to the intersection of South Street and Brown Avenue at 10:15 p.m. after receiving several calls that flames were coming from two manholes.
Cavagnac said when firefighters got to the area, they did not see any flames but found smoke coming from the manholes.
The street was blocked off and the area was cleared until Holyoke Gas and Electric was able to look into the problem. The manholes were also opened and ventilated during that time.
Some people in the area were without power for a short time.
The road has since been reopened.
