A new initiative began Wednesday, to find jobs for Hurricane Maria evacuees who’ve re-settled in western Massachusetts.
MassHire Holyoke, formerly known as CareerPoint, held a job fair Wednesday.
The agency’s hurricane job developer Frank Martinez told 22News, so far 20 to 30 percent of Holyoke’s newcomers have found work. He expects more opportunities to come in the next few months.
“They went through English classes, they’re going through everything needed to get work,” said Frank Martinez. “Really now that we’ve gotten them work-ready, we’re getting the companies in here.”
“It’s always a great opportunity to help people out, and we’re obviously looking for people to locate at one of the locations that we do own,” said Melissa Labonte.
MassHire Holyoke plans to frequently hold job fairs to further the employment opportunities for Hurricane Maria evacuees.
