Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno delivered a crash course in Social Studies to Gerena Community School fifth graders Friday.
The mayor spent an hour at the Gerena school providing an informal and wide-ranging civics lesson about city government and what it’s like to be the mayor.
5th grade teacher Margaret Sullivan told 22News, she couldn’t be more pleased with the student’s reaction to the mayor, “He was so warm and friendly and funny with them. He was on their level, but at the same time they were learning what we had taught them.”
Mayor Sarno told 22News, “What I got out of it, it’s the best meeting of my day, meeting with these young people. I tell them I sat where they sat, many, many years ago. I have the honor and the privilege of being the Mayor of Springfield, they can do the same if not better.”
The Mayor has invited the fifth graders to a future tour of Springfield City Hall for a close up look at the workings of municipal government.
